Mazda has revealed the CX-5, the new compact SUV due to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show next month.
While being an all-new model in its own right, the car is particularly significant as it is the first production car designed and built with Mazda's latest SkyActiv technology.
Beneath the CX-5's 'Kodo' design language lies a lightweight modular platform which will underpin a range of forthcoming Mazdas of different shapes and sizes.
As well as new construction techniques, the brand's fresh approach will encompass a range of new engines and gearboxes. The headliner is the CX-5's 173bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel which will develop 310lb ft of torque and CO2 emissions below 120g/km.
Mazda says a previously unheard of compression ratio - 14:1 - is the reason for the engine's impressive combination of power and economy. The latest 2.2-litre unit will be around 20 per cent more fuel efficient than the motor is replaces.
The Japanese firm is also promising class leading dynamics and refinement from the CX-5, which should reach the UK by the beginning of next year.
